China Cargo Misses a Transshipment Connection: Rebuild the Delivery Plan

First establish where the cargo is and whether it has a confirmed onward allocation. A missed connection at a transshipment port is different from an origin sailing rollover and needs its own evidence and revised delivery plan.

Confirm the actual event and cargo location

Ask the carrier or forwarder for the shipment reference, arriving vessel and voyage, actual arrival or discharge event and the missed connection details. Establish whether cargo is still aboard, discharged or awaiting another movement. Record the source and timestamp.

A tracking label may lag events or summarize them loosely. Ask the provider to explain conflicting updates rather than inferring that cargo is lost or already loaded onward.

Obtain the onward plan and its status

Request the next vessel and voyage, expected departure, allocation status and revised destination arrival estimate. Distinguish a proposed option from confirmed space and a departure estimate from actual departure.

Ask whether the change affects the route, documents, customs coordination or final delivery arrangement. Have the responsible provider identify required amendments and preserve the original records.

Example: arrival confirmed, onward allocation pending

Illustrative example: cargo discharge at the connection port is confirmed, but the suggested onward sailing has no confirmed allocation. Record discharge as completed and onward allocation as pending. Do not promise delivery using the suggested sailing as if loading were assured.

Agree a next update time and ask for alternatives if allocation remains unavailable. Compare additional transit, handling and charges before approving a change.

Track costs and customer commitments separately

Request the basis for any storage, handling or rerouting charge and identify the party invoicing it. Review responsibility under the actual booking and service terms; a missed connection does not automatically establish entitlement to reimbursement.

Update the receiving team with the verified milestones, unresolved dependencies and next review time. Retain the provider notice, decisions and invoices together. Close the exception after onward movement and delivery are evidenced, not merely when a replacement vessel is suggested.
