Suape terminal fee reduction: match the cargo category before revising a China–Brazil quote
For buyers shipping from China to Brazil, a lower destination handling charge is useful only when it matches the shipment and the quotation. Today’s briefing reviews Maersk’s October 30 announcement for Suape, effective from November 1, and separates the stated tariff from the checks needed for an individual booking.
1. What the carrier announced
Maersk’s October 30 notice links reduced Suape origin/destination terminal handling charges (OHC/DHC) to its move to a new terminal. From November 1, 2026, subject to the stated pricing-date rules, the table lists BRL 1,585 for dry containers and BRL 1,620 for reefers. Special and dangerous cargo rates remain unchanged; the table shows BRL 2,337 for special, dangerous and dangerous reefer categories.
The notice covers imports and exports. For non-SPOT bookings, it distinguishes non-FMC pricing by the first water-leg departure scheduled at booking confirmation from FMC pricing by the last container gate-in. SPOT bookings use booking confirmation date or first-vessel ETD at confirmation. Ask the carrier which rule applies to the actual booking.
2. Buyer analysis: identify the cargo and charge line
Send the provider the container type, cargo description, booking reference and destination terminal shown on the booking. Ask for the applicable handling category and charge code in writing. Do not assume a machinery shipment qualifies for a dry-container price merely because its goods are not refrigerated; its actual equipment and cargo classification matter.
Ask whether the destination handling line in your quote already reflects the revised tariff. Confirm who invoices it, its currency and any separate taxes or service fees. An agent’s bundled delivery price may contain several services, so compare like-for-like scope rather than replacing its total with a single carrier tariff.
3. Reconcile quotations without inventing a saving
Request a revised cost breakdown alongside the original quotation. Keep ocean freight, terminal handling, customs-related services and inland delivery separately identifiable. A reduction in one line does not establish a reduction in every other line or guarantee a lower final landed cost.
Illustrative example only: a buyer receives a revised Suape handling line but an unchanged total destination package. The useful next step is to ask which other line changed and obtain a reconciliation. Without the earlier applicable charge and matching scope, do not calculate or promise a specific saving.
4. Preserve the booking evidence
Keep the dated quotation, booking confirmation, equipment details and provider’s pricing-date explanation together. If the vessel plan, equipment or delivery scope changes, request a fresh confirmation before using an earlier cost estimate to authorize payment. Escalate an unexplained difference with both versions of the quote instead of assuming that invoice issue date decides eligibility.
MORENICE can coordinate China-side supplier readiness and shipment documentation while you confirm destination costs with the responsible service provider. This is a review of a dated carrier announcement and buyer checks, not a shipment-specific quotation, refund commitment or guarantee of unchanged tariffs.
