London Gateway empty-container restriction: confirm return instructions before dispatch
For buyers importing from China into the UK, the container journey continues after unloading. Today’s briefing examines Maersk’s November 2 empty-return advisory for London Gateway and the instructions a buyer should confirm with the carrier and haulier before arranging the return leg.
1. What the November 2 advisory says
Maersk reported that London Gateway stopped accepting empty containers from 12:00 on November 2, 2026, until further notice. It told hauliers to check MATS Online before dispatch. Pentalver London Gateway, Tilbury and Southampton are listed as possible alternatives only when instructed through MATS Online, subject to weather and available space.
The carrier expected disruption for most of that week. That is an expectation, not a confirmed reopening date. The announcement concerns empty-container acceptance; it does not by itself establish suspension of all port operations or loaded-container movements.

2. Buyer analysis: obtain a current return instruction
Ask the haulier or responsible logistics provider to confirm the return location for the specific container and retain the instruction with its timestamp. Include the container number, equipment type and booking reference so the instruction can be matched to the shipment. A depot appearing in a general advisory is not sufficient evidence that it will accept your particular box.
Before the vehicle leaves, ask the provider to recheck acceptance and any appointment requirements. If instructions change, obtain the revised destination and an updated transport plan rather than relying on an earlier screenshot. Keep the party responsible for dispatch informed of the same version.
3. Separate operational disruption from charge treatment
Ask for a breakdown of any proposed extra haulage, waiting or storage cost and the basis for charging it. Separately request written confirmation of the applicable empty-return deadline and whether any adjustment has been granted for this shipment. Do not infer a detention waiver or free-time extension from the suspension announcement.
Illustrative example only: a haulier proposes moving an empty box to a different depot after unloading. Before approving the change, the buyer asks for the carrier’s current return instruction, confirmation that the depot can receive the container, and an itemized revised haulage quote. This is a decision process, not a promise that an alternative will be available or free of additional cost.
4. Keep the delivery and return records together
Retain the delivery record, dated return instructions, dispatch messages, revised cost approvals and final empty-return receipt. If acceptance fails, ask the provider to record when and where the attempt occurred and the reason given. These records support a factual review of a later invoice; they do not establish an automatic right to reimbursement.
