Maersk reduces selected Middle East–West Africa surcharges: check the quotation scope

Today’s briefing reviews a Maersk announcement published on October 23, ahead of its stated November price-calculation date. It concerns selected Middle East-to-West Africa trades. Buyers sourcing in China should verify the billed route and quotation terms before assuming that their shipment qualifies.

1. The dated carrier announcement

Maersk announced a reduction in its Emergency Contingency Surcharge for the listed Middle East-to-West Africa trades from Price Calculation Date (PCD) November 1, 2026, subject to required regulatory approvals and notice periods.

For the listed origins—Jebel Ali and Jordan, plus Sohar, Fujairah and Khor Fakkan—the table shows the 20-foot dry-container surcharge changing from USD 2,450 to USD 1,950, and the 40-foot dry-container surcharge from USD 3,550 to USD 3,150. These are surcharge amounts per container, not total freight prices.

2. Buyer analysis: a China origin needs its own confirmation

The announcement does not list China as an origin for these changes. A container’s transit through a Middle East port does not by itself establish that a separately billed Middle East-to-West Africa tariff applies. Ask the quoting provider to identify the applicable origin, destination, equipment type, contract and charge basis.

Request confirmation of the PCD used for your booking. Do not substitute the invoice date, factory dispatch date or an assumed sailing date without the provider’s explanation. Keep the notice date, stated effective date and your booking-specific confirmation separate.

3. Compare the full quotation, not one charge

Ask for the ocean freight, relevant surcharges, local handling and onward transport to be itemized, with validity and exclusions. If the provider offers a revised quotation, record which line changed and whether other costs or service conditions changed at the same time.

Illustrative example: a buyer has a through quotation from China to West Africa and sees this notice. The buyer requests a written applicability check instead of subtracting a published surcharge reduction from the invoice. A confirmed change should be reflected in the provider’s revised quotation before the buyer updates its cost plan.

4. Today’s purchasing action

Keep the original quotation, revision, dated carrier notice and provider response in one shipment record. MORENICE can help coordinate supplier readiness and shipping information from China. Actual rates, route acceptance and charge application remain subject to the responsible provider’s confirmation.
