Maersk updates Nordic and Baltic inland fuel charges: verify the delivery leg

Buyers importing from China should check the destination delivery leg as well as ocean freight. A Maersk notice issued on October 27 lists revised inland fuel charges effective from October 28 for specified Store Door shipments.

1. What the dated announcement says

For Store Door shipments with a Price Calculation Date (PCD) of October 28, 2026 onwards, Maersk lists Denmark 14%, Sweden 13%, Norway 0%, Finland 7%, Lithuania 5%, Latvia 15% and Estonia 20%. The notice concerns an emergency inland fuel/energy surcharge, not a percentage increase in the full ocean-freight bill.

The carrier says electric-truck and rail solutions are currently unaffected. It describes the information as subject to change and says percentages will be updated weekly if they change. Keep the notice date with any cost assumption and obtain a booking-specific confirmation.

2. Buyer analysis: identify the charged service and calculation base

Ask the quoting provider whether your purchase includes a Maersk Store Door movement in one of the listed countries or a separately arranged inland service. Record the destination, delivery address, provider, transport mode and relevant booking reference. A China-origin shipment does not automatically establish which destination tariff applies.

Request the exact charge base, applicable PCD, currency, tax treatment where relevant and inclusion or exclusion in the quoted total. Do not multiply the published percentage by the goods value, the entire landed cost or an assumed ocean-freight amount. The dated notice alone does not resolve those booking-specific calculation questions.

3. Compare revisions using the same scope

Illustrative example: a buyer receives an updated door-delivery quotation for a shipment to Sweden. Before accepting it, the buyer asks which inland line is subject to the announced percentage, whether an earlier fuel allowance is replaced or supplemented, and which calculation date is being used. The buyer compares the old and new itemized totals after those points are confirmed.

If a provider proposes rail or an electric-truck option, ask about actual availability, route coverage, delivery timing and the complete price. A mode being outside the scope of this announced charge does not prove that it is available for your delivery or cheaper overall.

4. Today’s practical follow-up

Keep the original quotation, revised charge breakdown, dated notice and provider confirmation in one shipment record. Ask the supplier and forwarder to align cargo readiness, destination receiving arrangements and any resulting budget update. Record unresolved items rather than treating an estimate as a confirmed invoice.
