Diesel reserve developments: compare freight quotations on a consistent basis

The latest fuel-market development shifts attention from export restrictions to reserve releases. For buyers shipping from China, the practical task is to distinguish commodity-market news from the charges and conditions in an actual transport quotation.

October 2 development: diesel reserves and lower crude settlements

Reuters reported on October 2 that European leaders agreed to release diesel reserves. It cited a source on EU countries agreeing to a French proposal, while noting uncertainty about G7 agreement on the proposed release volumes. The report recorded Brent settling at US$102.25 per barrel, down US$0.06, and WTI at US$91.11, down US$1.76. These are October 2 crude-futures settlement figures, not current bunker prices or freight quotations.

Buyer analysis: do not translate the settlement into a freight discount

A commodity price move does not establish when or how a transport provider changes a fuel charge. Ask which published mechanism or agreed term governs your quotation, what period it references and when any adjustment applies. Record the answer against the shipment reference.

Keep a budget scenario separate from the accepted transport cost. Do not reduce a payable charge simply because an energy-market headline suggests relief; first obtain the provider's applicable notice or revised quotation.

Compare quotations using the same shipment scope

Give each provider the same origin, destination, cargo dimensions and weight, shipment mode and required handling scope. Identify whether the quoted amount includes fuel-related charges, origin handling, destination handling and any other stated items. An unexplained lower total is not yet a comparable offer.

Illustrative comparison: quotation A totals US$2,000 including a US$200 fuel charge. Quotation B lists US$1,850 but excludes a confirmed US$250 fuel charge. On those assumptions alone, B totals US$2,100. Other inclusions still need checking; these figures are an example, not market rates.

Confirm validity before committing

Request quotation validity, the event that determines the applicable rate, space confirmation and any cancellation or amendment terms. If a cost remains estimated, label it and identify who will confirm it. Preserve the version accepted by the buyer and provider.
