Andernach and Bonn barge services resume: separate cancelled contingency fees from low-water charges

For China shipments using a European inland barge connection, a service recovery notice can change one charge without removing another. Maersk’s October 29 updates for Andernach and Bonn make that distinction explicit.

1. Andernach: temporary contingency charge discontinued

Maersk’s October 29 notice says barge operations to and from Andernach Inland Terminal can resume after improved Rhine water levels and operating conditions. It states that the temporary landside contingency surcharge no longer applies from October 27, 2026.

The cancelled charge is shown as EUR 625 per container for both import and export directions. The notice covers cargo moving through Andernach, including inland locations served through that terminal. It separately states that the Low Water Surcharge remains applicable.

2. Bonn: a separate terminal and charge amount

In its separate October 29 Bonn notice, Maersk also says barge operations can resume and the temporary landside contingency surcharge is discontinued effective October 27. The cancelled amount shown for Bonn is EUR 175 per container in both directions.

Bonn’s notice likewise retains the Low Water Surcharge. Neither announcement establishes that all Rhine-related charges have ended or that every container has a confirmed onward departure.

3. Buyer analysis: reconcile the actual route and invoice lines

Ask the forwarder which inland terminal and service your container uses. Match the booking reference, direction and relevant movement dates to the provider’s written applicability confirmation. Do not apply the Andernach amount to a Bonn movement or deduct a published figure from an invoice without reconciling the billed charge.

Request an itemized revision showing the discontinued contingency line, any remaining low-water charge and other applicable transport costs. Keep the October 29 publication date separate from the October 27 effective date. Ask how the provider treats your particular booking or invoice instead of assuming an automatic refund.

4. Confirm the onward plan as well as the price

Illustrative example: a buyer’s China shipment is routed through Bonn. The buyer asks for confirmation that the temporary contingency line has been removed where applicable and separately requests the current low-water charge and onward barge plan. The updated delivery budget is based on that complete response, not a general assumption that river conditions have normalized.

Obtain the current connection plan, cargo availability and receiving appointment before changing the delivery instruction. MORENICE can help coordinate China-side supplier and shipment records with the destination team. Actual service acceptance, timing and charge application remain subject to the responsible provider’s confirmation.
