Transpacific rates climb while Europe softens: compare the lane before booking
Saturday’s briefing reviews the September 17 weekly freight assessment and reporting on fuel-driven pricing pressure. These are dated market observations, not September 19 quotations. Buyers should compare their own route, equipment and cargo-ready date before approving a shipment.
1. The global index conceals very different route movements
Drewry’s September 17 World Container Index rose 1% to US$4,500 per 40-foot container. Shanghai–Los Angeles increased 5% to US$7,712 and Shanghai–New York rose 7% to US$10,394. In contrast, Shanghai–Genoa fell 5% to US$4,016 and Shanghai–Rotterdam declined 9% to US$3,626.
MORENICE analysis: a headline about rising global rates is insufficient to judge an offer to Europe, just as a falling European benchmark does not establish the price available to a U.S.-bound buyer. Keep the origin, destination, service and quotation validity attached to every comparison.

2. Fuel pressure is a risk to pricing, not a confirmed future rate
Reuters reported on September 17 that Xeneta’s China–U.S. East Coast spot measure reached US$10,948 per 40-foot container. The report linked pricing pressure to fuel costs and quoted an analyst saying new records were possible. It also noted that Xeneta and Drewry use different methodologies.
Treat the record-high scenario as a forecast rather than an outcome already reached. Do not combine one provider’s current value with another provider’s historical peak to claim a record. A carrier’s applicable quotation and surcharge terms still determine the commercial offer for an individual booking.

3. Capacity and readiness need to be checked together
Drewry reported nine announced transpacific blank sailings for the following week, compared with eight in the assessment week. Its commentary identified pre-Golden Week demand and carrier capacity management as factors supporting that trade.
MORENICE analysis: a booked departure helps only when the order is ready for its cut-offs. Ask the supplier to distinguish production completion from inspected quantity, packed quantity and warehouse delivery. A delivery notice should not automatically be treated as evidence that every carton has arrived.
If one supplier misses a consolidation deadline, compare waiting, splitting the shipment or removing the delayed line. Record the revised cost and the buyer’s decision before changing the packing list or booking.

Before cargo release, reconcile expected cartons with recorded receipts, holds and authorised movements. Confirm whether any product inspection or unit count was actually performed. Keep the approved quotation, booking, packing list, receiving report and inspection decision together. If any item changes, identify the reviewer and the new deadline. This gives the buyer a defensible basis for deciding whether the order can move.
