CHINA SOURCING
China Sourcing Agent vs Trading Company: Which Is Better for Your Order?
Compare a China sourcing agent and a trading company by pricing, supplier transparency, contracts, quality control, consolidation and accountability.
The basic commercial difference
A buyer-side sourcing agent normally works under an agreed service scope. The buyer may see supplier identities and original quotations, while the agent charges for sourcing, negotiation, order control or logistics. A trading company normally buys or arranges goods and resells them, with its margin included in the product price and its entity often appearing as the seller on the contract and export documents.
When a sourcing agent may fit better
This model may suit buyers who want comparable quotations, supplier visibility and continuing supplier relationships. It is also useful when one China-side team must coordinate several factories or Yiwu vendors, quality control, warehouse receiving and consolidation.
When a trading company may fit better
A trading company may be practical when the buyer wants one seller and one commercial invoice, or when the trader adds genuine value through product development, export capability, credit or warranty support. It can also simplify small orders that would otherwise require disproportionate supplier coordination.
Compare supplier and pricing transparency
Ask whether original factories and quotations are disclosed, and whether the intermediary earns an explicit service fee, a product margin or both. Neither structure is automatically better, but the buyer should understand who selected the supplier, how the price was formed and whether any supplier rebate is disclosed.
Check contracts, payment and quality control
Confirm which entity is legally responsible for conformity, delay and refund; whether the payment beneficiary matches the seller or a documented collection arrangement; and whether inspection is independent and records the sampling scope and defects. For consolidated orders, define who records each supplier delivery, shortages, repacking and loading evidence.
Choose by responsibility, not label
Real businesses do not always fit neatly into one category. A transparent agent can still perform poorly, while a capable trader can add substantial value. Before deciding, obtain the entity information, written scope, payment logic, evidence deliverables and responsibility for exceptions.
