China Production Pauses for Missing Components: Build a Dependency Tracker
Track the missing component and the finished units it prevents from being completed. A promised component delivery date is not yet a confirmed finished-goods release date.
Define the dependency
Ask for the component identifier, approved revision, quantity required, usable stock and shortage. Identify the affected purchase order, assemblies and production lots. Separate components ordered from components received and accepted for use.
Request the supplier’s evidence for the expected replenishment date, including the source and last update. Record estimated dates as estimates. Assign one owner to the component follow-up and another to the finished-goods plan when different teams are involved.
Build the recovery sequence
List component receipt, incoming checks, assembly, finishing, inspection, packing and release as separate steps. Ask which operations can proceed without the component and what constraints remain after it arrives.
If a substitute or split shipment is proposed, review it through the appropriate approval process. Do not let a shortage silently change the product specification or assume an incomplete unit can be shipped as the ordered product.
Illustrative tracker
An order needs 1,000 units with one approved connector each. The factory has 700 usable connectors and expects 300 more. The component position supports at most 700 assemblies before considering other constraints; it does not prove 700 finished units are ready.
Record the 300 connectors as expected until receipt and acceptance are evidenced. Then ask the factory to update assembly and inspection dates rather than carrying forward the original completion promise without review.
Update delivery commitments
Compare the revised release plan with booking and customer requirements. If a partial shipment is agreed, record the quantity, inspection status and additional cost scope. Close the dependency only when the replenishment and affected finished units have reached the agreed verified milestones.
